Our History
ABC Cutting Contractors was founded in 1986 by C.P. (Paul) Allen Jr.. Paul grew up watching and eventually working at his father’s bridge building company. Through his involvement with bridge demolition and building, Paul began developing his experience cutting concrete structures. Recognizing a need for concrete cutting across industries, Paul started his own business at the age of 34 in Birmingham, Alabama – ABC Cutting Contractors. With a concrete saw loaded in his pickup truck, Paul was soon building bridges in a new way – establishing clients from Huntsville to Mobile.
He innovated engineering and cutting practices to meet the unique challenges his clients’ projects presented. Notably, he used a color coding system and Legos® to model projects in order to plan engineering solutions and to troubleshoot situations in advance to maximize efficiency and minimize risk.
Our Leadership
In 2010, Paul selected Teresa Walls, ABC’s office manager and an invaluable associate, to assume a leadership role in the company. That same year, Paul was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. When passed away in 2012, Teresa assumed the role as ABC’s president. With the dedication to mentorship as ABC’s founder, Teresa promoted Derek May into management with the company. Derek, a highly experienced operator in the field, brought his ground-level expertise into the office and onto the management team. He serves as the Chief Operating Officer for ABC and its three locations across Alabama.

Today we continue to follow in the footsteps of our founder. We innovate, focus on job safety and develop experienced crews through rigorous training with technologically advanced equipment and adaptive processes. We go where we’re needed and build the same trust with our clients by planning our jobs and communicating with project stakeholders from beginning to end – just how Paul would prefer it to be done.
OUR DEDICATION TO SAFETY
We invest in our people and our equipment, staying up-to-date with the latest equipment and employing field operators with over 20 years of experience. These practices put us in the position to have the knowledge to perform the most complex projects. Each employee worked their way to where they are in the company. From operators in the field, to dispatchers and managers, everyone is experienced or trained by the most knowledgeable in the business to ensure each job is completed in a safe and timely manner.
Specialized Training, Certification & Licensure
Being able to operate in challenging and restrictive environments means having the specialized training, certification and licensure to do so safely. Our crews regularly operate in restrictive areas on projects for the military, government agencies, the energy sector and in transportation areas including airports and seaports. We hold security clearances for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Transportation Workers Identification Credentials (TWIC) and for other restrictive locations. Our team is also OSHA 30 certified.
